The Most Busiest Time of the Year!

We can hardly believe it is already November! Fifth graders have had LOTS of exciting things happen in the last few weeks. We had an amazing trip to Aqualand Marina where we learned about repairium barriers, water filtration systems, and lake wildlife. We spent our time learning both on a boat looking for phytoplankton and on land learning all about our lake and all the valuable resources it has!

Fifth graders also turned in some AWESOME volcano projects! Mrs. Baldwin is so proud of each one. It was amazing to see how much knowledge these students showed during their presentations and it’s always fun to see these volcanoes erupt!

On November 11th, our school honored Veterans Day through presentations performed by our fifth graders! Our students showed a video, performed a play, and led an activity for all the grade levels in our school.

Check back soon for updates on the exciting things we are doing in fifth grade!

We are Scientists and Historians!

In science, students have been learning what it takes to be a scientist. We had a test over the characteristics of science and how to think like a scientists. Now, we are moving on to Earth Science. We have been discussing how the Earth's surface is built up and destroyed. Our volcano project is coming up, so I hope students have been preparing at home. The due dates are: Nov 6th for girls, and Nov. 7th for boys. We can't wait to see what they come up with!

In social Studies, we learned about what a historian was and how we are students of history, just like historians! We had a great first unit on economics where we learned all about how our economy works as well as what role we play in the economy. Students are working hard for their money for our classroom economy! On Friday, we successfully had our first classroom auction! Thank you to all who donated items to our class auction. Now were are learning all about the Civil War but will quickly be moving into Reconstruction and Life at the Turn of the Century. A project sheet will be coming home this week so make sure to check it out!

We are pleased to announce that the Hall County Board of Education is implementing a new process that will help improve the level of security and safety in our schools. The Raptor Visitor Management System will be in use at the start of the 2013-2014 school year. This system will require that visitors provide the driver’s license or other government issued photo identification card to school staff. Then in a process that will take less than 90 seconds, the identification will be scanned and checked against the national sex offender database. After a visitor is cleared, the only personal information that is stored is the individual’s name, photograph, date of birth, and the last 4 digits of the driver’s license number. Once your identification has been scanned, you will not need to present it to the school again for 5 years. However, each time they enter the school, the Raptor system will again check them against the offender registry.
The Raptor Visitor Management System is a precautionary measure. Any visitors without proper driver’s license or government identification will not be allowed to enter a Hall County School after September 5, 2013. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and help with this program.
